How to make a New Year’s resolution that sticks!

A lot of people think New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time but I don’t! What is a waste of time is if you make one and then don’t see it through. I find the Christmas break a perfect time to slow down the mind and get refocused. Following are five ways you can get clear on what you want to get out of 2011 and stick to it!

1. The first step to getting what you want is knowing what you want. When it’s quiet in the holiday time try and think about what it is you want to be different about 2011. How do you want it to be different from 2010.

2. Declare your new years resolution by telling someone you know. Let other people help you be accountable to yourself. The power of declaring your intention is massive so pick someone you trust who will support you.

3. Every day, write down your New Year’s resolution. I don’t know how many famous people have said this -  yet so few actually do it. This keeps your every day reality and your dreams in sync. Pick a time of the day this works best for you and do it every day. Carry your resolution around with you or pin a note on the bathroom mirror to remind yourself of where you are going.

4. Focus on how good it’s going to feel when you achieve your New Year’s resolution. This technique is called “seeding” and will inspire you towards your goal or destination. Imagine how you are going to feel on New Year’s eve 2011 when you’ve achieved what you set out to on New Year’s 2010!

5. Create some supporting beliefs around what you are trying to bring into your life. If your New Year’s resolution is to run a half marathon start by saying to yourself daily “I am a great runner” and “I achieve whatever I put my mind to.” This will slowly have you build your confidence and make you unstoppable in 2011!
