Some of us, at times, might sit at our office desk and wonder if we’d be better off doing something else. We’re so comfortable with where we are at; we dare not dream big, venture out and pursue what we really want.
Three years ago, Sarah Wilson dreamt big and took a major risk in her life. She started her own business in adventure coaching. Everyday she now has the ultimate satisfaction from helping people make their lives count.
Sarah describes adventure coaching as life coaching with an adventurous twist. She notes a subtle shift in the way people are now approaching life coaching. It’s not that there’s something wrong with how we’re living our lives, or that we need help.
“Many turn to life coaching not so much to dwell on past mistakes but more to learn how to harness what they have, to create a future they want.”
Sarah carefully customises coaching sessions for her clients around the world. The focus is on getting them to think about what they really want to do in life, and together laying out their options and possibilities.
The challenge for her is in working this out for each of her clients. Some think they know what they want but after several sessions they realise they want something else.
“What I provide in adventure coaching is also the safety net in taking risks. It is scary for anyone to go out there and take a massive risk on anything. We all need someone to tell us it is okay to be out there, to provide reassurance and support. I give this to people,” says Sarah.
There is no hard and fast rule to what constitutes a life adventure. It can be just taking a walk everyday. Or it can be quitting your job to teach blind children in Poland. Adventure, according to Sarah, is any undertaking where the outcome is uncertain.
Ultimately, what she is doing is helping people take that great leap in life, based on what is meaningful and fulfilling for them, gives them pleasure and makes the most of their strengths.
For Sarah, the best part of her job is clients who inspire her. Having led an adventurous life herself, from climbing mountains in Alaska and Pakistan, to finding environmental solutions in the Solomon Islands and Lake Khanas in remote northwest China, she is motivated to stretch herself constantly.
Perhaps now is the time we take the first step to climb our own mountains, step into the great unknown and fulfill that dream we always wanted to pursue.
