A 19 year old Wellington fashion student started clothing range because she felt a bit restless. She sold out in a month.
Inspired by military uniforms of the 18th century and the femininity of the 1980s romantic movements, Sophie Burrows a Honours fashion student at Massey University designs clothes that are attractive and wearable.
Her passion for fashion started when she received her first sewing machine at 12 years old and 7 years later with the help of a friend Sophie did a photo shoot of her designs, made website, used Facebook marketing and her namesake label was born.
Sophie hand-sews every piece ordered, tailoring each one for her customers. This eye for detail doesn’t end with her clothes.
“You have to make everything look professional. I sew my label at the back of my clothes as part of branding. When I send my designed clothes out to those who order them, I ensure that each one is individually wrapped and well presented.”
Sophie is fortunate to have had strong support from her family and fashion industry with invaluable advice and support.
But it is her talent and passion for fashion that sells the clothes.
Sophie believes much of her success is from her devotion, along with common sense, and sticking to what you’ve started.
She will continue designing as a way of building her portfolio with the hopes of working as designer upon graduation.
